Japan's 3D data production capabilities

 Japan's 3D data production capabilities

We introduced an example where even people without specialized knowledge can create 3D data with smartphone sensors. However, since it is just duplicate data of an existing three-dimensional object, the production of the original shape that is the basis of it is still left to the hands of professionals and creators.

In Japan, which is a manufacturing powerhouse, many professionals are engaged in the manufacturing industry. However, due to intensifying global competition in recent years, the domestic production value of consumer electric and electronic devices such as home appliances and AV equipment, where the appearance design of final products is particularly important, is compared with non-consumer devices such as semiconductors and motors. There is a large downward trend (Fig. 1). Many large companies have shifted their business portfolio from the manufacturing industry to the IT service industry under the slogan of "from manufacturing to manufacturing."

Once made in Japan, many industrial products swept the world and built an era. Industrial designers and designers who have high 3D data creation skills and have created beautiful product shapes can be said to be one of the assets of Japan, a manufacturing powerhouse, but at present, the number of industries that can utilize those assets may be decreasing. Maybe.

On the other hand, 3D data creation skills are necessary as various businesses that did not exist in the past are created, such as the creation of a new industry utilizing digital twins and the fostering of a market where 3D data itself is bought and sold as valuable resources. It has become an indispensable skill. Therefore, professionals who have created the appearance shapes of industrial products should be able to find great potential in the future as human resources who can embody and differentiate the future of new businesses based on 3D data.

Japan, which has many professionals as a manufacturing powerhouse, may have a chance to become a world 3D data powerhouse.

PwC is studying and demonstrating the possibility of using 3D data. We will continue to provide business insights on 3D data.
